This movie comes from Johnnie To, the legendary Hong Kong director who came up around the same time as John Woo and Ringo Lam, in the Heroic Bloodshed era. Where those movies were driven by anger at the Chinese takeover of Hong Kong, Exiled was made after the takeover, when it was shown that things hadn’t changed quite as much as the Hong Kong people were expecting.

The movie has an odd, dreamlike quality to it. An opening gunfight has a bathroom door fly off its hinges and it twirls gracefully around the room until the firefight finally ends. Later we see a character throw a Red Bull can into the air, and the entire gunfight happens in slow motion before the can hits the ground. This is a bullet ballet.

The story isn’t always quite as clear as the action, but this actually helps to improve the dreamlike quality of the film. To himself has admitted that he finds the film confusing and still hasn’t quite made sense of it. Watch it for the characters and the action, though, and you’ll be able to appreciate the movie in full.

The genre of Heroic Bloodshed was defined by angry violence, often showing one man up against an army as a parallel to the independent people of Hong Kong and their anger against the Communist China. After Woo and Lam went to Hollywood, Johnnie To stayed behind and redefined the genre on his own terms, turning it into something a little less vitriolic.

Exiled is a rare action film, and certainly one to see if you want something a little different than the usual shaky-cam shootout flick. Not too long ago, Mark Coleman headlined UFC 109 facing Randy Couture. Several days later, he’s apparently no longer good enough to remain in the UFC at all. On Wednesday, following a lopsided loss to Couture the UFC released Coleman from his contract and cut the veteran heavyweight. Coleman is now free to sign with any other promotion, but at 46 years of age his most likely-and most advisable-course of action is retirement. Fighters seldom do the ‘most advisable’ thing, however, and his actual plans are unknown at the moment.

Coleman became the first UFC fighter to be cut immediately after headlining a PPV event. Others have left due to drug test failures or for other opportunities, but none have ever been cut from their contract. Sources close to the UFC suggest that it was a decision no one wanted to make, but that all felt was unavoidable due to Coleman’s age and deteriorating skills. Of course everyone knew of his age and deteriorating skills for awhile now, so the UFC’s baleful response is a tough act to buy.

While the fact that Coleman is a shell of the fighter he was at his prime, the UFC’s suggestion that they have his best interest at heart is somewhat duplicitous. He was kept around and booked into last Saturday’s fight–a fight that no one particularly had any interest in seeing in the first place–simply because he was a fighter that Randy Couture could beat. Were the UFC interested in the well being of their aging fighters there’s several others on the roster that should also be cut for the same justification as Coleman. No one wants to *see* an endless parade of old timers into the octagon, but the UFC seems determined to shove their version of the ’senior’s tour’ down the throats of the MMA fanbase.

Coleman’s age has never been a secret and his diminished skill level was evident to anyone who has watched his recent fights. If the UFC was really interested in his physical well being, the main event against Couture should have never taken place. The fight itself wasn’t exactly one that UFC fans had been clamoring for and one that met with derision from the MMA media from the time it was announced. The UFC has tried to hide behind a litany of excuses as their PPV buyrates have eroded including the economy and a spate of injuries but at the root of the problem is the hubris of the promotion and the misguided notion that whatever sort of substandard product they serve up will still be bought.

While retirement would be in Coleman’s best interest, he may attempt to fight in a smaller US promotion or in Japan where he’s well known from his time in PRIDE. He’s already a member of the UFC Hall of Fame with a 26-10 career record and has fought the best in the world including Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Mirko Cro Cop. He has a family and kids so his best future would be out of the ring but few fighters have been able to make a clean break from the sport.

There is a lot to love about Terminator 2 – Judgment Day. It is up there with many other classic science fiction movies as one that is indispensable to the genre. The cinematography is great, and when the aspects of fate and trying to save the world are mixed in with the sometimes cheesy dialog and acting, we are left with one incredibly charming movie.

The story takes a small group of people, the Conners and the original Terminator, and pits them against a much more powerful force. The T-1000 is as indestructible to the original Terminator as he was to the Conners when he first showed up in the first movie.

The heroes of the story are trying to stop the global Armageddon that lead to the rise in the machines. They believe that if they can change a few things in the present, then the robots will never be able to rise up against the humans. By the end of the movie they think that they have succeeded. We find out later, in the next movie, that they only moved back the date of the robots taking over.

There are many aspects of fate to consider in this movie. Sarah was fated to be the mother of the savior of the human race. John was meant to be that savior. They never were given a choice in this. Sarah wasn’t even pregnant yet when the first Terminator showed up, so she clearly had no idea what was in store for her.

There is also the issue of the status of the mental health system in America. Even though the audience knows that she is not crazy, and that the future really is going to be dominated by robots in the future, the people in the present are all too quick to throw Sarah into a mental health lock-up because of her wild claims.

Yet everyone treats her like she is a completely insane woman. Are the filmmakers trying to say that, at the time this movie came out, mental health providers aren’t much more than professional guessers when it comes to mental illness? That if they don’t believe something than it must be a problem with the other person? They don’t go into this too much, so much of this has to be inferred, but there might be something there.

There are issues of fate surrounding John so much it seems to stick to him. He doesn’t really believe everything that his mom has told him. A part of him does, it seems, but he doesn’t really know that she isn’t just crazy. It takes the arrival of the robots from the future in order for him to see that he is not actually being raised by a crazy woman.

Strangely, without those robots showing up in Terminator 2 – Judgment day, there would be a very different story. Instead of a story rife with adventure and excitement, it would be a story of a boy being raised by a crazy woman who is teaching him to be a militant. There would be a lot of issues that could follow this, but with the Terminators showing up it ends up being a story that is more action than a sad story of modern day life for a broken family.

Rourke’s performance is the heart, the soul and the body of the film. He takes some real bumps and went through training to actually learn how to wrestle. That’s really him in the ring. Randy’s lifestyle has alienated everyone he’s ever loved and seriously done a number on his body. He has to see if he can make a comeback, both in the ring, where he’s washed up, and in his personal life, where he doesn’t even have a loyal fanbase to keep him going.

The movie will rip your heart out, showing Randy as he is in a light that it as once both humane, and unforgiving. He’s not given a pass for the mistakes he’s made, but he’s shown as a real human being, whose feelings are valid. He’s made mistakes, but that doesn’t make him a monster, and he’s shown in a loving light, if not an always flattering one.

Again, it’s all about Mickey Rourke here. The story of the Wrestler is as much his as it is Randy’s. Rourke himself has made a few mistakes, and just like Randy, was on the comeback trail. So the result is that he doesn’t just play this role, he lived it. Interestingly, the role was going to go to Nicholas Cage, but Cage dropped out so that Rourke could take it.

They might have been able to secure a bigger budget had Cage stayed on, but the end result is a smaller, more intimate, personal movie, and it’s all that much better for it. Rourke wrestles for small crowds, and it really drives home the fact that Randy gives his all to every show, whether he’s wrestling for a few thousand fans or a few dozen. He really bleeds it out.

The story is an old one, the characters are stock, but it never feels cliche or predictable. The movie is invested with such real humanity that it really feels like a unique, one of a kind tale of loss and redemption. Even if you weren’t so big on Pi and Requiem for a Dream, this may be Darren Aronofsky’s masterpiece, and it certainly shows a deeper level of humanity than his previous efforts.

When you hear the acoustic song by Springsteen at the end, take a moment to reflect on what the ending really means. This movie has a lot of depth, and sits somewhere between Rocky and Raging Bull in the pantheon of sports movies. It is, at once, heart breaking and heart warming, both upbeat and tragic, and the ending really drives that home. At the very least, it’s a story you’ll never forget.
